PETER BELISLE

The 2022-23 season will mark the 17th behind the UMass Boston bench for head coach Peter Belisle. Belisle ranks as the winningest coach in program history with 222 wins and 11-consecutive winning seasons.

In 2015-16, Belisle became the first coach in school history to be named the National Coach of the Year, after being recognized as the Co-STX/American Hockey Coaches of America Division III Men’s Coach of the Year.

Belisle also was named the New England Hockey Conference Coach of the Year in 2016, after leading the Beacons’ to their best season to date. UMass Boston won their first regular season and conference tournaments since 1982, before earning their first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament.

The Beacons went on to shock the college hockey world by going on the road to defeating reigning NCAA Champion Trinity College and then knocking off the top-ranked team in the East in Hobart College.

UMass Boston’s run finally came to an end in the NCAA Frozen Four, as the Beacons fell 8-7 in double-overtime against national power St. Norbert College. The men’s hockey team became the first program in school history to reach an NCAA Tournament Final Four.

Peter has taken the Belisle Hockey LLC ideology to the collegiate level, applied it, and has turned UMass Boston into one of the top division 3 hockey programs in the country.

Normand “Bill” Belisle (Manville, R.I.) retired after his 44th season as head boys’ hockey coach at Mount Saint Charles Academy (Woonsocket, R.I.) in 2018-19, having spent the past five decades transforming the Mounties into a national power and one of the country’s most famous prep programs.

Head coach at Mount Saint Charles since 1975, Belisle’s remarkable run to date has included many significant milestones, among them: 26 consecutive state titles (1978-2003); 32 state championships in 43 years at the helm; over 1,000 wins; two first overall NHL draft picks, including Brian Lawton, the first-ever American to be selected first overall in 1983 and Bryan Berard in 1995; and more than 20 Mounties who have gone on to be drafted by NHL clubs, including 2015 U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame inductee Mathieu Schneider.

A 2000 inductee into the National Federation of State High School Associations Hall of Fame, Belisle himself is an alumnus of Mount Saint Charles (1948), where he played hockey for its 1947 state championship team. Belisle was inducted into the Mount St. Charles Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014. Heading into the 2016-17 campaign, Belisle has a 990-183-37 overall record (.818) and a mark of 545-65-17 (.869) in games played at home.

Bill Belisle's accomplishments in the sport of hockey are unparalleled.  As a result, he has recently been inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2016.  His innovative coaching style and unique knowledge of the sport propels players to reach further, drive to the next level, and develop both on and off the ice.
